The next run of Channel 4’s documentary strand First Cut, will expand to 30 episodes, presenting a good opportunity for single film commissions, particularly for smaller indies.
Around 20 of the films will air on Channel 4 when the strand returns in January, with the remainder set for broadcast on More 4. This year, C4 aired 12 films and More 4 broadcast eight. C4 will keep the 7.30pm Friday-night slot for the half-hour films by up-and-coming directors, with More 4 showing docs at 8.30pm on the same night.
The strand is seen as a stepping stone to making films for hour-long Cutting Edge slot at 9pm, which also airs 30 films a year. Several films in First Cut’s second run, on C4 in August, gained more than 1 million viewers.
