Film – Online Distribution

Digital technologies offer increased opportunities for distributing feature films, either direct to the consumer’s own computer, set-top box or with a theatrical release via digital projection/satellite. This has also given rise to the popularity of live events such as Opera from the New York Met, Formula One racing etc.

With this new opportunity, however, comes the growing problem of Digital Rights Management and piracy via file sharing services such as BitTorrent and the question of how to monetise the content.

NESTA and UK Film Council have been running a pioneering project, Digital Innovation in Film, linking up film producers and distributors with new media experts to explore new methods of production and distribution. Following successful early sessions NESTA is exploring the possibility for rolling out a nationwide follow-on programme in collaboration with the Regional Screen Agencies, with Screen WM now involved in these discussions

This quarter, we focus on a few of the major issues and opportunities around digital distribution.
